Romans 6:23

Welcome to the first episode of Season 3 of Essential Verses. This season we will work on memorizing verses around the theme of the Gospel. A sort of path to salvation as we deal with sin, repentance, Jesus sacrifice, the new person that we become, and the need to share to Gospel with others. I hope and pray that this season helps you to not only hide God’s word in your heart, but to give you the confidence and conviction to share God’s word with others.

To start this season we will be learning (or reviewing) a classic verses from Season 1 Romans 6:23. This verse has many riches that help to start us down the Gospel path.

Romans 6:23
for the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord.

This verse is a classic overview of the Salvation plan, and is a great place to start in discussing the Gospel. It has a couple of elements that are crucial for understanding the Gospel.

The first crucial element that is contained in the verse is the fact that sin has a price. Many people don’t want to think about that these days, or feel that they can escape it, but the Bible is clear – sin has a price and that price is death. We all die, and we see that physically, but the Bible tells us that we will die spiritually too. Death is inevitable for us all, and then we will pay the price for our sin. Death is described in the Bible as a horrible thing to those that are paying for their sin – In Luke 13:28 Jesus describes death as a place where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. The price for our sin is death – and it will not be pleasant.

The second crucial element is that There is another option – eternal life. This is not referring to living forever on this earth, but a spiritual life that lives forever. When we die, our soul – our consciousness – lives on, either in eternal torment, or eternal life. This is exciting news – there is another option to paying for my sin with weeping and gnashing of teeth, and that option is available through the work of Jesus.

The final crucial element is that death is a wage, and eternal life is a gift. Wages are earned, a gift is not. We cannot earn our salvation – Jesus already did that. He paid the price for me and for my sin, and offers me life – as a gift. My sin is the effort that I exert for the wage of death, but Jesus paid the price and offers me eternal life through his sacrifice. There are no strings attached. All I need to do is repent from my sin and aspect this free gift that Jesus offers me.

Welcome to the Gospel Path. I am looking forward to walking down this path with you this season, and I hope that this helps you to Hide Gods word in your heart – but don’t hide is too carefully. The Gospel means, “Good News” so go tell the good news to somebody else today.
