Jesus left his disciples with a mission and a promise. The mission is to go into all of the world and preach the Gospel. The promise is that He will never leave them. The early band of disciples were powerless until the Holy Spirit came upon them, then they became fearless witnesses for Christ and the small group of believers multiplied at an amazing rate. These scared, timid, and uneducated followers risked their lives for what they knew to be true, that their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ rose from the dead and offers them life forevermore. This truth changed their lives, and started the early church.
The Church in the Bible is not the building, but the people. Although the early church did not have the buildings and resources that the church today has, some might say that they were more powerful and effective as God worked through them to accomplish His purpose. In the following study guides we will learn about this early group of followers that grew to be the most effective evangelistic tool in the world. Through this small group of people the Gospel has gone out to many nations and many people. The millions of people throughout modern history that have heard the name of Jesus and met His saving power have heard it because of the power of God in the lives of this small group of people. The Early church is an amazing study of the power of God to accomplish His purpose.
Matthew 16:18
And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
